While searching for his way out, he sees a person far away. He plans of robbing him. “Give me whatever you have” shouted the mugger by showing him the knife. The stranger removes a knife from his pocket and hands it over to the mugger saying he too was a mugger and had lost his way in the forest. Both decided to be friends and started looking for the way out.
Far away in the forest, they spot a lamp burning in a hut and decide to go there. On reaching the heart they see a Sadhu with a long beard they try to threaten the Sadhu and ask him to give away all his belongings. Sadhu calmly said,”I will give you whatever I have but it’s too late in the night. You can stay here. I will arrange some food and beds for you both”. After that the Sadhu gave both of them a coin each and said,”This is all I have now go and rest we shall talk in the morning”. All of them go to sleep.
Next morning as they woke up, the muggers were shocked to see themselves under the tree. The Sadhu and the hut had disappeared. They checked their pockets for the coin that Sadhu had given them the previous night. To their surprise the coin had turned silver. With great happiness both of them walked towards their respective homes. On the way they think about the Sadhu and the coin and finally decide to quit robbing and do some decent work.
Days passed, both of them had taken up some good jobs. They used to meet occasionally as friends. One fine day, a monk visited one of the friends’ houses. After talking for a while, he left, leaving a small bundle. The same incident happened with the other friend as well. Both of them met and narrated the incident to each other. When they both opened the bundles they had received, they were surprised to see a gold coin and a chit which read ‘the reward for honesty.’ They were overjoyed and thanked the monk.
